"Letters to God" opened in 900 theaters nationwide this weekend (April 9). That makes it the widest released faith-based film since "The Passion of Christ."
Derek Leonidoff, who plays Pastor Andy Dugger in the film, couldn’t be happier. He said, "There is a market out there for faith-based films and this sort of message that is untapped. I just saw a quote from a website that says ‘Christians vote with their wallets.’ When people go to see this movie it’s sending a message to Hollywood that people want more films with a positive and uplifting message."
"Letters to God" is based on a true story about a young boy with cancer who finds hope and strength through writing letters to God. These letters and the heartfelt messages within them end up dramatically touching the lives of those around him. The overwhelming theme of the whole project is "Hope is contagious." The movie is directed and co-produced by David Nixon, who also co-produced "Facing the Giants" and "Fireproof," and is presented by Possibility Pictures.
The red carpet rolled out for the World Premiere of "Letters to God" on March 31 in Orlando, Florida. It was an exciting time for the cast and crew who had put so much into bringing the project together. An estimated 700 people attended the premiere. Derek and his wife were excited to fly down to Florida and attend the special event. He said his experience on the red carpet and at the premiere was, "a blast!"
Derek spent June 2009 in Orlando filming "Letters to God." I asked Derek a few questions about his recent experience:
Q. What was it like working with the cast and crew on this film?
