Summer reading lists for kids 2011

Summer Reading Lists for Children 2011 – You have to keep your kids reading as it is something they will regret later in life and it really helps accelerate learning. Getting kids excited about books and reading with them over the summer months is a great idea.

Summer Reading Lists for Children 2011Summer is right around the corner, and school’s will be letting out for their seasonal vacation soon. Children may feel this is the best time to relax, but this is also an opportunity to brush up on their skills for the following school year. Aside from various summer camp programs and remedial summer school, your child may have a list of assignments to be completed by the first day of school this coming fall. Reading lists are usually part of these assignments, and keep students in the educational state of mind, making it easier to get back into the swing of things when classes resume.

Public libraries around the world take part in the Collaborative Summer Library Program, which provides “high quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest possible cost for their public libraries.” CSLP even has a teen and adult program.

Barnes & Noble lists summer reading recommendations by age group, including classics from Dr. Seuss and award winning novels like Charlotte’s Web. Their summer reading program has an incentive called Imagination’s Destination. Kids who read 8 books and record them in a reading journal can earn one free book from their list when they complete and return the journal to their local Barnes & Noble store.

E-reader devices such as the Amazon Kindle make reading fun and portable for children, allowing you to hold hundreds of books in the palm of your hand. Barnes and Noble released a color version of their e-reader, Nook, and are holding a summer reading sweepstakes to win a device.

Check with your child’s school to find if there is a required reading list over the summer, and find programs to participate in at your local library or bookstore.
